Comments CommentsIt felt great to be back out on the snow again for the first time since May! This was also my first time skiing in October. The Barker base area was open, but only the Locke Mountain Triple chair lift was operational. Typical early season operations are in effect at Sunday River. Loading skiers and boarders from the base and mid-station on the Locke triple. Off loading only at the summit. This chairlift is an older style fixed grip model. And they were only loading every other chair at the base and the mid-station, so the lift lines moved slower than normal. Trails open today were T2, Jungle Road, and Sunday Punch from the summit to the mid station. Sunday Punch was open top to bottom. The upper mountain trails were in good condition. About a foot of natural snow fell Tuesday night, and was still in place. The trees were snow covered from midway up the mountain to the summit, making for a scenic chairlift ride. T2 trail was in good shape with some areas of packed powder. Sunday Punch was also good for the upper 75% of the trail. The bottom 25% near the base was a bit sketchy at a few spots though. Some thin cover over the cross trail drainage ditches required slowing down so as not to become airborne! And there were a few stones poking through to avoid. There was about a 10-15 minute wait at both loading stations as many chose to ski only the upper section. Arrived at 9:00, and skied until 12:30. Broke for lunch, then decided to call it a day as it was starting to snow quite heavily. Overall it was a good start to the season! How often can one ski on the same day that the Red Sox played in two World Series Games!
