Comments CommentsFirst ski day of the season today. Went to Okemo and skied just for a couple hours, since there were only 2 top to bottom runs open anyway. High winds in the morning impacted lifts, starting with only the A Quad, Black Ridge and Sachem lifts open. Sachem was not scheduled to run today and substituted Sunburst. Around 11:30, Sunburst opened, but Sachem remained open until about 1:30. Green Ridge didn't open until around 1:00 for some reason. Around 11:45, the A quad out of the base had a good sized line that stretched across past the B Quad's terminal. I wish they would've had both A and b running. Sunburst had a roughly 5 minute line that moved pretty quick throughout my time there. Green ridge and Black Ridge had minimal lines, and Sachem rarely had any line after Sunburst opened. (I wasn't there before Sunburst opened).

Conditions varied by run. Because of the low amount of runs open, I will list the conditions of all the main open runs:

WORLD CUP: Upper was good, with relatively soft snow and occasional ice. Lower was horrible and was sheer ice on the main pitch halfway down. This was likely due to it being very skied off due to the Sachem Quad being the highest lift open that morning due to wind.

SAPPHIRE: Was in good shape with minimal ice. Most major patches were marked with the orange poles. Open only to Route. 103,where you then ski onto Upper Arrow.

ARROW: Arrow is already in it's usual unusual shape, being so skied off it has both lots of ice and powdery bumps (mainly on the lower portion). Upper was not as bad as lower.

LOWER MOUNTAIN ROAD: The usual turnpike down toward the lifts and base area. Pretty soft though as it is well lit by the sun.

Overall, it was a good first day back after a longer than normal off season. Vail did a great job at handling everyone and all the new operations during the pandemic. Will be back next Saturday.
