Comments CommentsSix inches of new snow brought out throngs of skiers and boarders today. Many IKON passholders chose to redeem one of their five or seven days today. I arrived early to get a parking spot but heard that by 8:00 traffic was backed up all the way from Loon to the Rt 93 exit ramp.

Started out at the new Kancamagus 8 lift. The RFID gates are located outside of the new building. After going through the gates there was a staging area where groups lined up. There was a singles line on the left side. Thankfully there was a lift attendant up front grouping folks together to fill up all 8 seats! The singles line moved quickly. Almost every chair had space to fill in after folks in the group line were placed on deck. The chairlift ride was fast and smooth, as expected. The safety bar locks in place once it comes down, you can't lift it back up. There are pinch points where the footrest part of the bar meets the seat between your legs, so be careful not to get anything caught there. The bar lifts back up by itself at the end of the ride. There was some congestion at the top because folks didn't always clear the unload area fast enough. I noticed that there is a new spur trail at the beginning of Blue Ox which connects to Rampasture. This is helpful if you want to take Rampasture but are loaded on the left side of the lift. The snow in this area was mostly tracked out powder.

North Peak lift had about a five or six minute wait most of the morning. There was no singles line, and nobody was directing trafic.
Folks had to group together and alternate the lines by themselves. The East Basin lift was not running today. The snow on North Peak was mostly bumped up powder on top of icy hardpack. It was quite windy there too. Upper and Lower Flume were open, but looked too icy for my taste.

When I came down from North Peak around 11:30 I found out that the new Kancamagus 8 lift had shut down for an electrical issue. Ski patrol told me it probably would be down for the rest of the day. So I headed down to the gondola side. There were massive lines for the gondola and Seven Brothers so I called it quits for the day. As luck would have it as I was driving out I saw that they were loading the Kancamagus 8 again.

Snowmaking was active on Loon Mountain Park trail, the Tote Road, and at the South Peak area.

Weather: Mid twenties, snow flurries, and windy.
