Comments CommentsA busy but nice day of skiing. About 11" of snow in the past week and no thaw in the past 10 days makes for good skiing. We arrived around 7:30 to get a good parking spot in the main lot. Started out at the West Basin on the Kanc 8. Got an early start before that area got busy, 6 runs per hour pace. Skied all the available trails and possible combinations. Upper Rumrunner and Coolidge Street were closed off for the race kids. Lower Rumrunner was open via the trail from Rampasture. Most of the West Basin trails were nicely groomed packed powder. Lower Northstar was powder moguls on top of a river of ice, we skipped it. Lower Speakeasy was open with natural snow conditions, thin in spots but not bad.

Headed over to North Peak. It was busy when we got there, about a 3 run per hour pace. When it gets busy like that you need to make every run count! The East Basin Double wasn't running, which was very disappointing. It's been running the past few weekends and really helped to take the load off of the North Peak Quad. A lift attendant named Tim was working the North Peak lift line today. He has been doing an outstanding job recently of filling the chairs and keeping the line moving smoothly. By noon time the lift line shrunk by 1/2 as folks stopped for lunch. We had our pockets stuffed with snacks so that we could take advantage of the shorter lift lines. All trails and glades were open in this area today. Most trails started out as nicely groomed. By noon parts of Upper Walking Boss, Sunset, Picked Rock, and Flying Fox got skied off to the underlying boilerplate. Lower Angel Street stayed nice. Basin Street was ungroomed natural snow, but no moguls. Big Dipper and Triple Trouble were in decent shape with ungroomed natural moguls. Rolling Bear hasn't been groomed since before last weekend, but it's been cold so no moguls have formed on it yet.

Didn't go to the Gondola or Seven Brothers lift area today. it's too busy over there on the weekends.

We finished the day at South Peak. The headwalls of Twitcher/Jobber and Ripsaw were skied off by then, but the rest of the trails were good. Boom Run and Cruiser were still in nice shape. Cruiser gets the later afternoon sunlight, it was good. Took the Tote Road back over to the main mountain, and skied down Upper Speakeasy, it was still in good shape. Upper Rumrunner was open by then so we skied it and Coolidge Street back to the base. It was still good.

Weather: 9° at opening, 37° when we left. Sunny all day, no wind. Even though the temp rose above freezing today the snow on the trails was cold and stayed frozen.
