Comments CommentsHappy 90th Birthday Black Mountain! My buddy Sarah beat me there by over an hour, she got there at 9:15, was Parked by Erik wearing his best Joe Lefors straw skimmer hat. Bonus points to anyone that gets the reference. They opened the lift earlier then scheduled at 9:30 and she got 5th chair. I got there at about Quarter to 11 and had to park in a field spot just off the road above the maintenance building. Jackson's finest was out in full force soon after to make sure nobody parked on anyone's front lawn going up to Dundee Road. Saw one car get towed. The parking lot stayed full, but people came and went all day. I think they did well managing the crowd. I navigated the line to check in with my Indy Pass. Lift line was to mid parking lot by then. Started out sunny and beautiful for our first run, then gradually cloudier and then steady rain by the time we made it down our third run. We checked out the Lostbo Cabin Bump and Grind DJ Dance Party briefly for the free T shirt. Erik was in full Ski Area Manager mode, running all over the mountain in his track equipped John Deere Gator with yellow flashing Kojak light. Once it started raining heavy, be broke for lunch. The staff was hastily setting up another pop up tent on the deck, I helped move a picnic table. Sarah had to go after 1, I stuck around and the rain actually broke and we had another hour and a half of dry weather where the sun even peaked out once. I made 4 more runs top to bottom. The top of Maple Slalom started to show mud and rocks in places, but that didn't stop the young fearless ones from sending it straight down, even if they had to run out onto the bare ground on the first turn. I never went back to the Cabin. I didn't like dance club music in College and I like it even less now. Although I did find the live Sax player an interesting addition to play along with the DJ. The upper to mid section of Jackson Standard was carved up with deep Killington Style moguls by 2 pm. The snow pack in that section is deep too, and I bet it lasts into the rest of the month. I almost bit it on my last run coming down off Maple Slalom and the heavier rain returned so I called it at 3pm. I wandered around for a bit with another hot dog and beer. Watched the rain and people watched for a while. If it was a nicer day I may have stuck around and hiked a bit. Go watch the video shorts people post on the facebook, they're pretty good. I missed the $1500 champagne toast later in the afternoon, as well as Erik in the bouncehouse. All in all the snow was actually pretty fantastic, not to mention that little south facing Black Mountain beat out Attitash, Wildcat, Cannon, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Saddleback and Waterville Valley and many more to hit the first weekend in May! Lord knows what it all cost to pull this off, and I'm a bit skeptical about how the yet to be formed co-op will be able to shoulder all of this. I also don't get the fetish for Champagne either... Maybe Erik will sell Indy Pass and keep this going himself. He's a natural Ski area Manager.
So that's it for the season kids, I'm calling it! 20 days this year and I started and ended the season at Black. Spring is here. Time to feed the humming birds, pick fiddleheads, and go hiking. See you next year!
