Thank you to the Readfield Recreation volunteers & Kents Hill School for the Community Ski & Snowboard Day 10:00am to 2:00pm. It's a top notch facility to be proud of.
According to a liftie and a RR person this was the the first time they have opened to the public in memory. It was a $10 donation to RR and they had bake sale going too. We arrived just before 10 and got the last spot in the front row that held 5 cars. We had the only out of state plate I saw that day. Had to carry my skis thru the lodge because of the snow banks. A Piston Bully sat outside along with looked like 4 newish Demac fan guns and 4 portable guns. The lodge ground floor from the front has 2 large rooms w/kitchen & lobby. Out the back you you are on a 2nd floor deck. Both rooms have some comfy couches, chairs and some wooden benches. The left room has lockers for KHS students. Wooden skis in that room are used in the light fixtures. We were politely asked to move to the right room as they were reserving this one for KHS skiers. In the other room a moose decorates the stone fireplace and snowshoes are used in the light fxtures. After I booted up the tow still wasn't running. They were waiting for waivers. Some KHS personnel or friends did a run or two, perhaps to test the tow. There was only I and a young gentleman waiting to ski. I got my form done first but he beat me down the hill.
This is a top down ski area. It has a nice view of Torsey Lake and you are basically skiing down to a gravel road in front of the lake. Sledders, ATV and ice fisherman park along it. There was a lot of action out on the ice. An eagle was flying over looking for a fisherman's catch or bait? The liftie told me later there were usually three. Question: for a top down area do I have to turn my SkiTracks app upside down to count the runs?
The slope on both sides starts out real gentle which takes some doing to get going. This leads to a short headwall. Skier's left had a more consistent pitch but on that side you have to go around the electrical shack at the bottom and uphill to the tow. The corduroy was immaculate and firm despite the air temp. The powder on the right side edge was still powder. There was nobody down at the bottom unless they were inside the tiny lift shack or elec. bldg. First problem for this old guy...the rope runs at a pretty good clip along the ground. But here comes the kid and I latched on after he did. Problem solved. Its a pretty nice ride. One section is fairly steep 49.6% according to GE and when you get over that knuckle the rope got heavy so I rested it on my hip. A boarder joined us so there were just 3 of us for quite a while. I was thinking this wouldn't be a good place for beginners and there weren't any. Until later. I hadn't notice until my 2nd run on the left side that there was a mini rope tow tucked on the side of the hill maybe a couple hundred feet long. The only 2 really young tykes I saw were skiing over there with thier parents. That's a nice flat area. Once back over the other side that eagle flew from behind me barely 25 ft right over my head.
The liftie or maybe patrol joined us on his board. Well he had a walkie talkie at least. Now there were 10 people total. The rope had worn a deep groove in the snow and was even harder to pick up. The liftie dug by hand a little pocket around the rope. And picked it for some.
My SkiTracks says 5 runs but I count 15 or 13 depending which way I hold my phone.
On the way out I was told they are trying to do a makeup date in March for the cancelled Jan. event. But nothing definite. There were down 3 rows of cars in the lot. The 3rd row being one car.
