Comments CommentsPresident Cal Coolidge once said in a speech in 1928 "Vermont is a state I love. I could not look upon the peaks of Ascutney, Killington, Mansfield and Equinox without being moved in a way that no other scene could move me." This is a sentiment that has always resonated with me every time I climb to the top of the Lincoln Mountain Range and gaze across the valleys to the far horizons all around. This particular Monday was no exception. The clouds stayed high as to not obstruct the views, yet shielded the mountain, along with myself and what seemed like 20 other skiers on the mountain that day, as well as kept the snow soft yet still firm. I wasn't in a hurry since it was a week day and I knew there really wouldn't be any crowds, especially at Sugarbush North. I opted to stay there although the Slide Brook Express was running and tempting me to head south, I instead explored the trails I rarely get to ski, and even some trails I've never skieed before. The spring snow was the perfect consistency and never got slushy or icy all day. I tried lower FIS for the first time. It was enjoyable but I didn't find it all that challenging to be honest. The long run out past where the lower rope tow was to the top of the old T Bar at the now semi abandoned Snowflake area was done without any walking but did require skating in parts. The very end of what was Ellen's Alley is roped off at the top of where the old T Bar top terminal was, so you're forced to either ski down Snowflake and then walk back to the base or ski the old Tbar line into the end of the terrain park and brave the Sunshine Quad along with the park rats blaring their death metal. I took my only ride up that chair and scooted off back to the Green Mountain Express. It was a shame Inverness wasn't running because the snow was absolutely perfect on that side. I made the long skate along Northway only once to ski Brambles. It was a great day to ski Encore and Terminator since there was nobody there and the bumps were soft and rather forgiving dispute being very deep. Took the time to take in the views around the panorama trail and overlooking FIS. Around 3, the summit lift was briefly closed to loading when I witnessed what looked to be part of a char grip fall off just above the loading terminal. I made a run down and then back up the GMX Quad and by that time they were loading again, with now 2 dead chairs at the base. It took me up a few more times just fine. There were bare spots to be found all over certain parts of these natural trails and I was actually surprised they left them open. I doubt they lasted to the end of this week. I have no idea what the trail count was but it seemed there were only a few trails completely closed, at least over here. It doesn't seem like the new management cares to really keep up this side of the mountain the way they should, which is a shame because the terrain here is excellent and has always kept the snow much longer than it's Sister-Mother to the south. Yes they lost alot of snowpack up here this week but there is still plenty to go around and I predict at least one more snow event before this season is over.
