Comments CommentsI got talked into skiing Cannon on Saturday. Without the offer of a hotel room in Lincoln on Friday night, I probably would never have gone, but like that old saying, a bad day skiing is better than a good day...
On the promise of a few fresh inches of snow overnight along with clearing skies throughout the day, we headed up into Franconia Notch and made it on the chair by 9am. Parked across the street, and people were pouring in. Didn't bother to check in at the ticket counter with our first Indy Pass redemption and were able to be scanned directly to the lift. (We both did make a reservation online the night before) Took the Peabody Quad up into the fog and navigated down to the Cannonball Quad on loos granular over ice and a rock solid Icey loading area. "Cannon powder! Can't beat it!" said a patroller to us. Despite the fog and the ice, The top mountain trails skied the best all day, with 4 distinct runs down, Tramway, Upper Cannon, Ravine and Taft, with Ravine being my favorite of the day. With the fog lifting slightly, and the trails loosening the base up a bit with skier traffic, along with our own legs warming up, those 4 trail skied remarkably well even as the temps dropped and winds picked up making it feel more like January than mid March. We lapped the Cannonball Quad in the morning, then took a break to assess our plan for the rest of the day and attempted to explore the rest of the mountain. Middle / Lower Ravine was absolute garbage. Best way down the mountain was Middle Cannon and then down. Glanced over at the Front 5 and thought better of it. Returned to the summit for lunch, did a couple more runs then thought we'd try our hands at Mittersil. Races were going on Barron's but we could get to the double and ski down Skyline and Ridge run which were actually ok. Side skidded down most of Dragon's Drop over to the intersection with the race course which did have a crossing guard to bail you out and back to Tuckerbrook area which was also pretty icy and firm. Saw two crazy kids attempt a glade off Dragon's Drop, thankfully they only popped in and out since as the older kid put it "dude you're skiing on rocks and trees!". We traversed back to the base and up to the summit trails again for a few more runs before calling it quits and heading down to the base again by 3:30. Heading out of the notch was a different world, all bright and sunny and at least 10 degrees warmer! So, even on a bad day, you can still ski decent runs at Cannon. Got a nice tip from the guy working at the rental shop about the demo sale and a pretty good ski sale at Sport Thoma too. Dinner at The Common Man in Lincoln never disappoints either.
