Comments CommentsBeautiful spring day. Snow did not set up overnight, but temperatures did not get prohibitively high today despite the sunny skies, so conditions were good.

The Black Mountain snow report both under- and oversells what's open. On a sheer trail count, it makes it look like only half the mountain is open (not true when excluding glades). However, it lists trails open that simply weren't (Black Hole - roped with literally two piles of snow and otherwise fully bare; The Goose, also roped with I recollect 5 patches of snow).

Upper Maple Slalom to Chute to Maple Slalom appears to be this spring's choice for May skiing. Good base depths and a snowmaker was out hosing up guns (looks like they have 1-3 possible nights of snowmaking ops coming up). The pitch of Jackson Standard also has good base depths, but the entrance is getting thin (looks like it'll be accessed via the crossover adjacent to the old cabin).

Most other trails were open, except Down Under, Runaway et al, White Knuckle, Sugar Loop, and I think Beauty Loop. Whitney's Slope is closed with patchy snow remaining.

Speedwell was ungroomed with some adventure skiing. Roller Coaster and Black Diamond are on their last legs, as is the lift line from Rollercoaster to Farmer A. Some thin spots in the novice trails to skiers right as well.

Up top, Lostbo Pitch is well covered (exit onto Upper Black Beauty is a little thin, and Upper Black Beauty is a little thin on the lower flats).

Platter was open, but tomorrow will probably be it by the looks of the lift line.

Some massive whales down low by the triple and double.

Only encountered lift lines a couple of times (like 4 chairs) all morning.

There will probably be less terrain by next weekend, but I think there will still be multiple trails open, which shows how much snow has been made on this south-facing lower-elevation ski area.
