Comments | Got out for a fun evening of skiing at Gunstock yesterday. The weather was great, with no wind, clear skies and temps falling into the 20s throughout the night. Before it got dark, the views of Lake Winnipesaukee were terrific with Mt. Washington also visible. After I booted up, I got in one run off the summit before it closed at 4:00. They kept some of the non-lit trails on the lower mountain open until 5:00, so I was able to ski Middle Trigger, Out of Sight and a couple others before they got roped. Conditions were better than I expected given the recent rain/freeze cycle, with plenty of sugary loose granular snow. Some of the steeper trails had frozen granular with some boilerplate, with Tiger Steeps probably being the iciest. Ungroomed terrain was a crusty hardpack and I didn’t ski much of it. Before 4:00, almost all trails were open except for a couple that were natural snow only. Lift lines were very short, with Tiger and Ramrod generally being ski-on and Pistol and Panorama having a line of only a few chairs. The lighting coverage was fine in most areas, except for a few spots like Upper Cannonball which had a large dark section between lights. All of the night skiing terrain was open except Ricochet (natural) and Red Hat (for unknown reasons). It felt good to be back to Gunstock for the first time in a few years; it's where I learned to ski as a kid. I hope I can come back sooner rather than later to ski more of the classic New England-style trails from the summit. |
