Comments CommentsNice day at Sunday River yesterday, with generally good conditions thanks to recent natural snow and good snowmaking weather. No natural-snow-only terrain open, but good packed powder on most trails with some ice patches (a few quite large) developing as the day went on as one would expect. Weather was great in the morning with sunny skies, low winds and comfortable temps in the 20s, though it got cloudy and cooled down in the afternoon with a brief snow shower also taking place.

On South Ridge, there were a few different beginner routes open from the South Ridge Express as well as the usual Grand Rapids > Lower Amex > Lower Lazy River > Broadway early season route from the Chondola, which wasn't as bad as I've seen it in previous years but still got scratchy with random bumps at the pitch on Lower Amex. Paradigm was open to connect to the Aurora base, it also got icy in the afternoon. Only waited at most a few chairs for the Chondola.

On Locke Mountain, Sunday Punch and Cascades were open, with the former having better conditions. T2 and Jim's Whim were closed for racing as per usual. On nearby Barker Mountain, options were Jungle Road, Ecstasy or Lazy River with Lazy River being the best. No line for the Locke Triple and a few chairs at most for Barker 6.

From Aurora Peak, Borealis, Aludra and Lights Out were open to connect back to South Ridge, as were Cyclone and Firestar to connect to Jordan. Most of these connector trails all skied decently well. Northern Lights was ungroomed from Cyclone down and was the run of the day with packed powder on the sides and snowmaking whales down the middle, though one had to watch out for some sneaky ice patches and "death cookies" near the bottom. No lines for the Aurora Quad. Noticed the Quantum Leap Triple had some chairs taken off the line and piled up near the bottom terminal, looks like they don't plan on running it soon.

On Jordan the typical assortment of groomers were open, with Lollapalooza the best and Excalibur the worst (upper pitch was basically all ice even in the morning). The line for Jordan 8 was 2-3 minutes in the morning; luckily they had an attendant managing the line and making sure chairs were filled. The Jordan 8 closed for a mechanical issue in the afternoon and it looks like they ran the Jordan Mountain Double to bring people back to Aurora, but Jordan 8 reopened for the last hour of the day and it was empty over there.

Snowmaking looks to be complete on Upper Risky Business and Upper Amex. There was also snowmaking running on Monday Mourning, the T-bar line line, Grand Rapids and a few other trails off the Chondola, and possibly some trails in the White Cap Quad area.

Great day of skiing overall and good to see the weather should continue to be favorable for snowmaking!
